Red River Quilters is a non-profit organization formed in March of 1983 to promote the appreciation and preservation of quilts, to encourage the art itself, to foster charitable endeavors, and to provide a forum in which quilters and quilt lovers might share their common interest in the art of quilting. Based in Shreveport/Bossier City, the Guild draws its membership from the extended Ark-La-Tex region and typically has approximately 300 members at each years end.
The Guild sponsors
QUILT SHOW , an annual show and seminar featuring regional and national
teachers. RRQ provides demonstrations for community and regional event, hosts educational workshops and lectures and participates in philanthropic activities.
Red River Quilters publishes "News from Around The
Block", a monthly newsletter for its members. Red River Quilters is involved in several service projects.
Selection of service projects is always subject to review and acceptance by the
Board of Directors and the membership, and participation in any
service project by members is optional.
Examples of the Guild's service projects include ABC Quilts,
Love Wrappers for local babies in area hospitals, and other projects. Red River Quilters produces an annual donation quilt to raise money for the Guild to
support member education, workshops, and community service activities.
Meetings are on the first Monday of each month at 1:00 PM and 6:30 PM in Shreveport at the Broadmoor Presbyterian Church,
1915 Grover Place. They include an educational program, a business portion and the the unabashed favorite, The Show and Tell, portion in which members
show quilted items, both completed projects and works in progress, antique quilts, offer book reviews, report on new tools on the market for quilting, etc.
Membership annual dues are $16.00; special reduced rate of $12.00 applies to members
under 18 and age 62 and over.
In addition to the monthly meetings, many members routinely attend the Guild's tributaries, small information get-togethers
reminiscent of the time honored quilting bee, where members gather simply to quilt and chat. There are several
tributaries throughout the area, some convening during the day, some at night. Guild members
may attend any tributary.
